How a Camping Trip in Esperance turned in Reefwing Photography

Reefwing Photography didn’t start with a formal business plan or a sit-down meeting. It started on a camping trip, surrounded by open skies, incredible turquoise water, and the kind of coastline that makes you pull the camera out before you’ve even unpacked the car.

What began as just two mates messing around with drones quickly grew into an aerial photography business—built on real flying experience, a solid creative eye, and a shared obsession with looking at the landscape from above. Behind the Screen

Not every key moment happened in the air. One of our favorite early photos isn't a drone shot at all—it’s a candid photo taken on the trip showing the two of us hunched over the computer in Photoshop, completely locked in, refining an image after a long day of flying.

It’s a simple shot, but it says a lot. It shows the quiet, unglamorous side of photography: the hours spent reviewing files, debating small color tweaks, and making careful editing choices long after the drone batteries are packed away.

Getting the raw file in the air is only half the job. Bringing out the real essence of the location—the exact shade of the water, the line of the reef, the feel of the light—takes real work on the ground.

Camping in Esperance has a way of slowing everything right down. The beaches are massive, the ocean shifts from deep navy to blinding turquoise, and the horizon seems to stretch on forever.

We had brought a couple of drones along purely for fun. There was no grand business proposal over the campfire and no brand name written on a napkin. It was just two friends launching drones into the air, watching the live screen, and getting that classic buzz as the camera climbed up over the dunes.

From the sand, the coast was unreal. But from the air, it was something else entirely.

The sweep of the shoreline, the pattern of the swells, the sand textures, and the changing colors in the shallow water came together in a way we’d never seen before. Every flight felt like uncovering a hidden view of a place we thought we knew.

Thistle Beach is the kind of spot that rewards you for taking your time: pure white sand, incredible blue water, and enough natural shape in the coastline to make an aerial shot pop. We flew, framed the shot, made tiny adjustments, and waited until the lighting felt right.

Long before Reefwing had a name, the foundation was already being built across two very different skillsets.

On one side was over 20 years of hands-on experience flying RC planes and drones—learning how aircraft handle, how quickly the wind can change, and how fast things can go wrong. That kind of flight intuition isn't learned from a manual; it’s earned by spending years building, testing, crashing, repairing, and trying again.

On the other side was a lifelong passion for visual arts, an Italian heritage rich in design and light, and formal photography training at TAFE. That background brought a deep understanding of framing, balance, color space, and visual storytelling—the exact elements that separate a quick aerial snapshot from an image you want to hang on your wall.

How Reefwing Photography Came to Be

Reefwing Photography grew out of that natural teamwork.

Looking back, Reefwing didn't start with fancy studio gear or a marketing strategy. It started with two mates, a couple of drones, camping gear in the back of the car, and a coastline that continues to inspire every single flight we take.
